Most people are confused about the difference between gold, purple and green seamoss. This is one the most frequent questions we get asked, so we’ll do our best to answer it here.
Why Is Seamoss Either Gold, Purple Or Green?
First off, when seamoss is found in the ocean, it is naturally coloured. There are a few different colour varieties found here in St.Lucia, such as reddish brown, light brown and green. When dried, the reddish brown seamoss turns dark purple, the light brown turns light purple, lilac or pinkish, and the green turns to various shades of green.
To make purple and green seamoss, the seamoss must be air dried and shaded to preserve the natural pigments. The natural pigments are very high in antioxidants, and have cancer fighting and detoxing properties.
Gold seamoss is made by sun-bleaching any of the various colours. During sun-bleaching, the seamoss leaches out the natural pigments, and turns white. The sun-bleaching process is a natural process with no added chemicals…the sun does all the bleaching!
After gold seamoss is sun-bleached, it is then sun-dried by placing it out in the sun for several hours, During the sun-drying process, the seamoss turns to a golden colour, hence the reason it’s called gold seamoss.
Are There Different Health Benefits Associated With Gold, Purple and Green Seamoss?
All seamoss varieties contain 92 of the 102 minerals the body needs to thrive, however, the different pigments are associated with additional health benefits.
Purple seamoss is high in Anthocyanins, which are the water soluble pigments that give foods their red, purple and blue colours. Anthocyanins are phytonutrients which are powerful antioxidants that fight against free radical damage, and are anti-ageing. Here are some additional benefits of Anthocyanins which can be found in purple seamoss:
- Fights inflammation in the body
- Helps balance the hormones
- Strengthens the immune system.
- Prevents heart disease and hardening of the arteries
- Helps prevent and fight cancer
- Helps prevent diabetes
- Helps prevent neurological disorders, such as Alzheimer’s disease and dementia
- Prevents vision loss
- Helps prevent obesity
- Increases energy and prevents fatigue.
- Helps to clear brain fog
- Improves memory, concentration and cognitive function.
Green seamoss is high in Chlorophyll, the pigment which gives plants their natural green colour, and therefore contains all the health benefits associated with Chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is a super potent nutrient dense antioxidant which:
- Enhances overall well-being
- Oxygenates the body
- Helps boost energy levels
- Helps build the blood
- Increases cellular energy production thus increasing energy levels
- Protects the liver and improves liver detoxification
- Promotes cleansing and detoxification of the body
- Boosts the immune system
- Is anti-inflammatory and fights oxidative stress
- Prevents chronic diseases such as heart disease and diabetes
- Helps fight cancer
- Promotes beautiful glowing skin and helps heal the skin,
- Helps with weight loss,
- Is anti-ageing
Gold seamoss retains its vitamins and minerals and all the other health benefits associated with seamoss, such as:
- Boosting energy
- Assisting with weight loss
- Helping with joint pain
- Helping to regulate the thyroid
- Helping the body to heal faster
- Boosting the immune system
- Doing wonders for the hair, skin and nails
- Improving sexual health
- Helping to prevent and heal Anemia
- Improving mental health
- Improving digestion
- Getting rid of mucus in the body
However, gold seamoss loses the potent health benefits associated with purple and green seamoss, because the natural pigments are leached out during the sun-bleaching process.
Each seamoss variety has unique health benefits, so it’s a good idea to incorporate them all into your diet for optimal health benefits.
